New year’s resolutions for 2021

Writing new year’s resolutions is something I have been doing since 2007. But for some reason, I took a break in 2020 for some reason. Might be because I got engaged over the christmas last year so it must have slipped my mind.

  1. Learn to drive
  2. Shutdown noise in my life. Unsubscribe to newsletters, slack and text alerts
  3. Learn to bake.
  4. Create weekly meal plans.
  5. Setup my office and use it.
  6. Try to get out of the house for a walk once a day.
  7. Finish planning my wedding

Last years Resolutions revisited 2018

It’s the time of year again to revisit last’s resolutions.

Be better in touching base with people. Send messages, call and take people out for dinner. Make sure you know what is going on in my friends and family’s life.

Failed. With running business and working open source project, I think I have got waste at this. I do do catchups with friends, but I am rubbish at answering texts.

Drink more watch and less soda

Success. The trick to this not buying it and having it in the house.

Learn to drive

Failed. Again, this comes down to limited time. I am going to try and find time this year.

Walk more

Success. Moving house helps with this and going for walks in the Richmond area.

Be more mindful and read up on mindfulness.

Success. I was more mindful this year and I tried to rest more. I think having a place to fix that I want to spend time, really helps with resting at home.

Read about nutrition

Success. I did read a book called The Diet Myth. I also read some interesting

Do more public speaking

Success. I did a talk at WordPress meetup. I put in requests to speak at 4 WordCamps.

Be more humble

Success. This is one, I need to remember and also keep in mind.

Invest money better

Success. Put my money in premium bonds, as they are super flexible.

Take more downtime away from my computers.

Success. Put my money in premium bonds, as they are super flexible.

Not bad this year with only 2 really fails. I have been extremely busy this year, so find time to do lots of these things.

Last years Resolutions revisited 2016

I have been doing these new years resolutions post, since 2007. I think it has really become an important part of my life, as it gives me a chance to reflect on goals I have for the next year and reflect goals I did and didn’t manage to archive in the year. These posts are normally published in early January at the same time the new resolutions go up. However, those following this blog and who know me well, know that 2016 was a very different year for me. Half way the year, I decided to quit my job and go travelling. This put a lot of things out of whack in my life as everything went on hold. This list doesn’t really feel like it reflects my goals for 2016 anymore. But for the sake of completion, I will still work my way though the list.

  1. Be an organiser, plan events, meetings and interesting trips
I feel like I completed this one. Planning a trip around south america and USA, was really hard.
  2. Take a trip to a far away country, like America.
I went around South America, Mexico, USA and Canada on a backpacking trip for 7 months.
  3. Stop stress eating and eat smaller amounts
I lost a lot of weight travelling and the amount of food I eat was very controlled. But this is an on going thing.
  4. Read more to learn things, broaden my mind
I had a lot time to reading while travelling.
  5. Learn a new programming language or framework, make a project using framework
I didn’t have the time to get around to this one.
  6. Watch / listen more none mainstream media, find indie films and new music
This is one that I didn’t do, as it really didn’t fit into plan for the year.
  7. Commit to 10k steps a day
I have since bought a fitbit and I using it to track steps.
  8. Create list of things to do with weekend and spare time and do them.
I didn’t do this one. I don’t really know why.
  9. Buy a good camera and become a better photographer.
I bought a Canon 75D and having been taking pictures with it whenever I can.
  10. Take more breaks and have a full lunch break away from my desk.

Last years Resolutions revisted 2015

It is the time of the year when I look back on the year that has gone by and see how well I did on my new years resolutions.

  1. Prioritise happiness over productivity
This one feels like a fail, I was extremely hard on myself last year on a number of personal projects I was working on. Will do better next year.
  2. Leave more time to get ready and prepare things earlier
Getting up earlier and setting aside time for admin has been life changing. It cuts down a lot of stress to not rush things in the morning.
  3. Get rid of unused computer hardware and simplify technologies I used
Still have some things to sell, but I feel I did this. Number 6 on my list helped with this.
  4. Move all my projects, documents and photos to scalable cloud services I.e GitHub and Google drive.
It took me nearly a month to upload all my images and documents to google drive. Well worth it the hard drives in my flat are now almost never used.
  5. See more live comedy
I went to Scotland in August to see comedy at the fringe festival. Also saw a number of shows in London in the year. Was great to see some big headliners, but I might try and go to some shows for up and comers in 2016.
  6. Plan to move out and make it happen
Easily the biggest life change ever. So glad it finally happened, after being on these lists since 2013. Finally got there and couldn’t be happier about it.
  7. Sleep more
Massive fail on this. Last year was pretty high stress for a number of reasons. I was however more rested, which is good, I guess.
  8. Watch more movies and read for fun
This feels like a fail, as it is the least amount I have been to the movies in years. I think it one of the poorest year’s in my life for films.
  9. Share what I know about WordPress
    • Blog
    • Talks

This was less of fail and more that I decided it wasn’t for me. I did do a lot of open source stuff in 2015. I even got something committed into WordPress core in 2015. Something I am extremely proud of.

  10. Security
    • Change passwords
    • Delete unused accounts.
    • Enable two factor authentication

Installed 1Password was a really big step forward on this one. I had a massive problem with using insecure password as I have a poor memory. Installing this means I could use secure passwords. I was also forced to install 2FA for work, so it pushed me to do it in my personal life as well.

  11. Privacy, lock down social media accounts.
  12. Automate where possible
I used IFTTT to automate much of my life. It did become a pain to maintain some of it and I gave up after a while. There wasn’t much in my life I needed to automate, so it wasn’t too bad.
  13. Don’t waste time on YouTube.
Massive fail on this one. I find myself not watching tv anymore and youtube has lots of great content. It hasn’t help me get to sleep, as I end up watching hours of youtube when I can’t sleep. 🙁

8 of 13, not great, must try harder.

Last years Resolutions revisted 2013

  1. Move out
This one didn’t happen because I basically had the choice of going travel and change jobs or moving out. I think I picked wisely.
  2. Travel
I went to 7 counties this year, it was amazing and I am really glad I did it.
  3. Be decisive
    Done
  4. Go digital
    • Move as much as possible to the cloud
    • Backup online
    • Stop buying physical media, DVD/Blu Rays
    • Use technology to overcome my poor memory

Part success on this one, but at the end of the day, decided not to backup online, as there was nothing I cared about that wasn’t already backed up online, my photos and music are online, my films / tv, I am not bothered about loosing.

  5. Don’t procrastinate
Considering I didn’t finish one of the easiest things on this list, I am not sure I can say that I didn’t procrastinate.
  6. Don’t waste my time and get the most out of my time
    • Don’t watch TV/films at I don’t care about
  7. Be more sociable, meet new people and make new friends
Feels like I have been to busy with everything else that I feel like I haven’t had the time.
  8. Don’t be a snob
I feel like I haven’t  done this, not sure why, I need to keep working on it.
  9. Learn to cook a roast
This was the easiest on the list and I never got around to it. My bad.
  10. Complain less, laugh more
I have had a hard year and I am sad to say I let some of it get on top of me. I am will work on it.

Update from 2012

  1. Go to at least 5 EU counties
  2. Readdress my work/life balance

As part of my travels, I went to 6 counties this year. Good to get this one. Also by changing my job I did readdress my work / life balance.

Update from 2007

  1. Complete Grand theft auto 3 PC

I buy GTA3 for my iPad and completed in January.
